    Zichron Ya’akov, Israel

Coming from Acre, we leave the coastline behind us and head for Zichron Ya’akov, at the top of Mount Carmel, where the Elma Arts Complex Luxury Hotel rises imposingly.

This is an impressive work of brutalist architecture, built in 1968 by the architect Yaakov Rechter to house the Mivtachim sanatorium and it earned him the Israel Award for Architecture in 1972. Regarding this emblematic building, which represents the essence of 1960s Israeli design, it’s worth recalling the jury’s observation when defining it as “a rare example of architecture which synthesises earth and sky.”
