Located in the trendy Mexican city of Querétaro, this restaurant welcomes us with a design inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi – an aesthetic that finds beauty in imperfection.
Just two hours from Mexico City, Nama was born in one of the most dynamic areas of Mexico and honors several local artisans from different regions of the country. In an enthralling game of contrasts, various environments were created with organic forms and natural materials, such as wood, stone, copper and wicker, mixing light and dark, smooth and raw, to achieve a subtle balance.

Interior designer Claudia Ornelas worked with local artisans to develop specific finishes and textures. “For the selection of materials and colours, we played with opposites, focusing on the relationship between light and dark, between fine and rough surfaces,” says Claudia Ornelas. For example, the Nigiris bar is made of local stone and contrasts with the oak wood deck. The wicker lamps, suspended over the bar, are reminiscent of traditional lobster fishing baskets.
The designer desired to create “a relaxed space with several atmospheres”, which was achieved “by configuring the restaurant with different heights marked by the suspended lamps, which result in different settings due to their shapes, dimensions and how they bathe in light”, she says.
