The Budapest Cafe
“Our design draws on filmmaker Wes Anderson’s meticulous, memorable and magical worlds to create an inviting destination with whimsical character and international appeal.”
Set in Chengdu, China, The Budapest Café transports us to Wes Anderson’s distinctive universe, offering an experience where “layers, elevations and design features encourage customers to explore and physically engage with the space”.
The symmetrical, vivid and nostalgic colour palettes, that explain Anderson’s style, inspired the Australian practice Biasol to create an international hospitality experience, with minimalist and refreshing lines. Despite its loftiness and exposed structure, The Budapest Café is designed to feel feminine, light and fun, with references that punctuate the space - a pink ball pool, neon signage and original Eero Aarnio Bubble chair, enhancing the imaginative and magical atmosphere of the space.
Customers are invited to engage with the physical design of the café, much like a stage set for patrons to play out their own story. All the design details, contrast and soft tones reflect the personalities of Anderson’s characters in The Grand Budapest Hotel, now with a touch of Melbourne’s café culture.
