It was in 2016 that “The Universalits” appeared for the first time, in Palais de Chaillot, in Paris. An exhibition promoted by the French delegation of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in partnership with the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine, that marked the 50 years of the foundation in the French capital.

Two years later, it’s time for Casa da Arquitectura to bring for the first time to Portugal this portrait of the latest 50 years of Portuguese architecture, through 50 unique and representative projects, that evoke five phases of the Portuguese history - nationalism, colonialism, the revolution, europeanism and globalism.

From 13th April to 19th August, the multimedia exhibition invites visitors to deeply discover the Portuguese universalism, “a particular universalism in which the best Portuguese architects have been creating their pieces of work, from generation to generation, balancing the universal heritage from the Architecture’s history and the geographic and cultural particularities of their places”, explains the curator Nuno Grande. An architecture that can’t be separated from the political, social and cultural context of its country, neither from several references such as Fernando Távora, Pancho Guedes, Nuno Portas, Álvaro Siza, Alcino Soutinho, Eduardo Souto de Moura e Manuel Graça Dias, also present during this exhibition.

Mock-ups, technical drawings, sketches of architects and caricatures fill the walls of the Nave Expositiva in Casa da Arquitectura during the next months, through a constructive approach, that helps “to understand more than just the architecture, it helps to understand Portugal”.
From 13th April to 19th August
