Located in the heart of Helsinki, we uncover the recent renovation of Amos Rex, formerly known as Amos Anderson Art Museum. The contemporary museum, taking over Lasipalatsi, an emblematic 1930s pavilion comprising restaurants, shops, and a cinema, has recently added a new layer, designed by the Finnish practice JKMM Architects.

By maintaining its original façade on Mannerheimintie street, the studio created a new building beneath the square, aiming to house the exhibition spaces and workspaces. “The connection between the past and the present creates an interesting starting point for the design of the new museum”, they explained.

In order to achieve it, the practice designed halls with structural dome ceilings. A contemporary architecture, that could be easily integrated into the surroundings, bringing daylight into the subterranean exhibition spaces.

“The new Amos Rex museum will refine and structure the location at the Lasipalatsi Square, giving it a new identity as the focus of lively urban culture” added JKMM. Now, the gently curving domes have become the perfect place for events or just hanging out.
